England Train in Black History Month Shirts Ahead of Euro 2020 Qualifiers

England national team players have been training in black history month shirts as they prepare to face Bulgaria and Czech Republic for Euro 2020 qualifiers. The match will take place in Sofia on Monday in Stadion Vasil Levski, which will be partly closed after Bulgaria fans were accused of racist behavior against Kosovo earlier this year.

Black History Month is observed throughout October in the UK. England players have been raising awareness by wearing black shirts. Chelsea striker Tammy Abrahams has said that they’ll walk out of the pitch should be racist behavior against England players.

Recently, Raheem Sterling was racially abused during a match with Montenegro. Should such happen, UEFA has put in place a three-step protocol:

  • Players must inform the referee
  • If taunts continue, the stadium announcer will request the fans to stop.
  • If they persist, the referee will halt the game and lead players out of the pitch.

Tammy Abraham said that the England players would take matters on their own hands, adding that, “We’ve had several meetings about it. We’ve touched base on how to deal with the situation. Harry Kane even said that if it happens and we’re not happy with it, we speak to the player, and if he’s not pleased, we all come off the pitch together.

“It’s a team thing. Don’t isolate one person; we’re a whole team. If it happens to one of us, it happens to all of us.”

Asked whether he was confident that players would walk out of the pitch, he said that he was convinced that they would.
